Biblical Counseling

Nouthetic counseling (Greek: noutheteo, to admonish)
is a form of Evangelical Protestant pastoral counseling based solely upon the Bible and focused on Christ. It repudiates mainstream psychology and psychiatry as humanistic, fundamentally opposed to Christianity, and radically secular.

Nouthetic counseling is now referred to as Biblical counseling, and it may be described as discipleship in the time of crises. Every Christian is called to disciple, whether it be their family, members of their local church, or those within the community. Likewise, everyone goes through moments of crises from time to time. Therefore, it would be good for ALL Christians to learn the fundamentals of Biblical counseling.

When asked who should take this course, the answer is every Christian. However, only mature Christians should counsel in a professional environment such as at the church or counseling center. For those seeking certification with the desire to counsel people outside their own family, you should have obtained a level of Christian maturity consistent with that of an deacon. (1 Timothy 3:8–13) They should also have the appropriate spiritual gifts: encouraging, exhorting, teaching, knowledge, wisdom.

Certification Process

If you are interested in taking the course as an "audit" for your own personal edification, you DO NOT have to go through the certification process!
If you are interested in getting certified, the details are listed below.

There are many organizations that offer training and certification in biblical counseling. We recommend Institute for Biblical Counseling and Discipleship (IBCD) and Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC). ACBC is our top recommendation for certification, in part, because they have an online directory of counselors. Basically, it's free advertising.

The process is slightly complicated so please read the following carefully. ACBC does NOT offer training in our area but you must finish training in order to be certified through ACBC. Because of that, we will be doing IBCD's training which will than satisfy the ACBC training requirement.

You must complete the IBCD training in order to be certified through ACBC but you do NOT need to complete IBCD's exams and application for certification.
